Data Grid column-width settings
Column-width settings control the starting width of a specific Data Grid column. Use them only after confirming that the grid is the right interaction pattern and that the content needs a tailored width.
Set the target nested field ID and an initial width in pixels. Start with the default layout where possible; fixed widths can make grids difficult on smaller displays and at high zoom.
Choose widths by content
Give short identifiers less space than descriptions, but do not make important values truncate. Test the grid with long values, translated labels, narrow screens and keyboard navigation. If the grid is hard to use at a reasonable width, reduce columns or offer the table fallback rather than continuing to tune pixel widths.
Apply widths to the right nested field
The width setting applies to a specific nested field in the Data Grid. Confirm the field ID before changing it, especially in a repeating group where several fields can have similar labels. Use a stable Field ID, not a visible label, so a wording improvement does not break the layout setting.
Start with an approximate width based on the longest realistic value, then test it in the real grid. Do not tune against a short example only: identifiers, translated text and validation messages can be much wider in use.
Prefer content changes over pixel tuning
If a description column needs most of the available width, ask whether the grid has too many columns or whether that information belongs on a detail page. If several fixed widths cause horizontal scrolling, simplify the content before increasing the overall grid width.
Let ordinary text wrap where it improves readability. Reserve fixed no-wrap treatment for genuinely short values such as a status, concise code or date. A table fallback may be the better experience for people using a narrow display.
Test checklist
- The setting targets the intended nested Field ID.
- The chosen width accommodates the longest realistic content.
- Labels, errors and translated text remain readable at zoom.
- The grid works at narrow widths and with the table fallback where available.
- Width changes have not hidden or clipped essential values.
- The layout remains understandable without relying on horizontal scrolling.
